FMT (Fashion Museum Tower)

Omotesando Street, Tokyo, Japan

In Japanese fashion one element seems to be common: continuity. As the kimono is created by folding one big piece of cloth, so do most contemporary fashion designers design their clothes according to this cultural phenomenon. The idea for the Fashion Museum in Tokyo is based on this simple but challenging design method, where a continuous ribbon is wrapped around a flexible volume, continuity is created physically and socially. The volume of the fashion museum is the result of a design process of which the parameters are related to the environment and the program of the building. The continuity starts and ends with a terrace: one at its lowest point at the entrance, and one on top next to the sky bar and Japanese garden. In this way the building connects the vivacious street life to the silent view of the Tokyo skyline.
