A lot of buildings went up quickly in Rotterdam in the postwar reconstruction period. The centre was mainly filled with offices, which were constructed in accordance with the norms of the time. Now, half a century later, other norms apply and these old offices are much in need of modernisation. Our design, however, is more than a simple renovation: the rational structure, in which comfort plays a major role, could equally well be applied to a custom-built office.

Three zones The basic principle of the design is a division into three zones that takes into account the different activities in an office and the routing between the zones. The first work zone, which is the most closed in character, accommodates the staff who need peace and/or privacy to carry out their tasks, such as financial matters, personnel affairs and management. It also accommodates a small, closed room for meetings. The second work zone is the place where the core business takes place: clusters of six workplaces per item, which accommodate project groups. There is a sense of intimacy within each cluster, while it is still possible to take in the entire zone at a glance.
